Les Damour
Q: What is your show about? Why did you format it this way?
A: My show, "Abstraction", centers around my collection of timeless Downtempo, Deep House, and 90s House records. Named after my favorite visual art style, each set is curated for the people at Hi-Note and for anyone streaming online. To keep things interesting, I always try to juxtapose popular records with lesser-known releases that I feel deserve more recognition and there tends to be a gradual build in tempo carried throughout every set.
Q: What is your favorite record and why?
A: Julien Jabre - Time EP. It is one of the quintessential Deep House records from the late 90s-early 2000s era. I bought it at one of my favorite records shops in the city (Second Hand Records in Bushwick). All 3 tracks on this vinyl only release are amazing. Being one of the few people in the world to own this record and play it out feels deeply rewarding!
Q: How did you start spinning and how long have you been doing it?
A: I started DJing in 2019, primarily playing at home and at my friends' house parties. It felt natural to me because I had already spent a lot of time finding music that really resonates with people, learning music production, and studying music theory.
Q: What draws you to radio?
A: When I was a kid, I would stay up late almost every weekend to listen to DJs on the radio and find ways to record their sets just to listen to my favorite records back. I would end up listening to the radio so much that I would even fall asleep with it still on! Even now, regardless of the genre or when the record was released, discovering music that really resonates with me never seems to get old.
