BRIAN THABAULT
Brian Thabault is a New York City based music producer, DJ & multi-disciplinary artist. With a distinct focus on house & techno, Brian’s musical range as a producer extends from ambient, through down-tempo, hip hop, rnb and pop. His Live sets and DJ sets cover all of this ground and more, adapting to the audience to deliver a unique performance everytime.
Born and raised in Vermont, Brian began producing music on a second-had PC computer at the age of
12. His path through music crossed the country with time spent in Boston & Montana where he studied
graphic design. Early influences that drew his focus into electronic music included working actively in local hop hop scenes as a DJ, producer and studio engineer. Electronic music was a constant anchor point that became more focused after hearing the record collections of local DJ mentors, and travelling frequently to festivals like Movement in Detroit & Camp Bisco in New England. His DJ arc began by hosting weekly college house parties, then moving into the clubs and renegade mountain festivals of Montana. This trajectory eventually led to performing multiple sets of original music at Burning Man in 2016. That experience spurred the decision to relocate to NYC and fully immerse himself in music culture. Since that move, Brian has carved out a place for himself in the New York community by hosting a weekly Open Decks event for 4 years, and aligning himself with the well established ReSolute crew, working behind the scenes to help the event grow.
Brian is co-founder of his own label, Tri Music Group. which has released more than 50 projects since its
orgins in 2014, including three vinyl pressings distributed by Yoyaku. The label has been the home for a steady stream of his own solo work, from dance singles & EPs to fully developed concept albums. The label also features curated releases from his own close friends. This includes music by Spin Department, his collaborative project with label co-founder Shane Johnson aka Tessub. The recent Spin Department effort, ‘Sorting Days’ was released on 12” vinyl and features a remix from Berlin based group Wareika. This project has found support from ReSolute residents O.BEE & Tomas Station, and other notable DJs in NYC and beyond.
As a performer, Brian splits his attention equally between DJing and live performance. His DJ sets are
known to walk between many genres, blending digital and vinyl formats, shifting style and energy levels depending on the venue and environment. Operating under the philosphy that DJing is reacting in realtime to the energy of the crowd, Brian approaches each set as a fresh slate to create a novel sonic experience for his audience. Over the past six years, Brian has also developed a unique live set, building a fully customized Ableton file containing stems of his own productions that he then remixes in creative ways.
The sound develops in a non-linear fashion, with the addition of improvised rythmns from a drum machine
and outboard effects. Given the range of his catalog, these sets can range from ambient and downtempo
to club-focused house and techno. Brian has brought his live set to notable stages such as ReSolute &
Cityfox, as well as club gigs at TBA Brooklyn, H0l0, Bossa Nova Civic Club & Flash Club in DC
Brian is also the founder of Co/Function, a monthly event in NYC focused on live electronic music and
visual improvisation. Each event is a curated group of up to 8 musicians & visual artists to collaborate &
improvise music and visuals live. The individual artists are linked together by a common midi clock, using DJ mixers to blend together synths, drum machines, traditional instruments and their own vocals. This recurring night is quickly becoming a staple in the NYC electronic music community, staying on the cutting edge of technology and electronic music culture.
